We've really enjoyed walking to school this week. We went past the finish line on our chart because so many of us walked. It was good fun for some of us to walk to school altogether on Wednesday.
We hope you enjoyed our Country Dance of Buttered Peas yesterday or today. We have worked really hard to remember the different steps, and worked well in our small groups and partners.
In Creative Writing, we imagined we had our own hot air balloon and wrote an adventure about where it could take us. Mrs McLellan was impressed with every single story that was written. She read all of them to the whole class!

Explaining Science!
This week, we have joined our English and science learning. We have been reading explanations and finding out how hot air balloons work. We used pictures and sentences to describe this.

There''s a lever to open the flap at the top of the envelope and when it opens, it lets the hot air out and the cold air comes in. Then the balloon comes down carefully. Georgia.

I was challenged to get down the ramp without pedalling. I shuffled in the seat to make it move from the flat part to the slope. Finally I went really quickly down the slope. Grace

In maths, we have used last week's learning about arrays to solve multiplication problems. Mrs Hinchliffe has challenged us to bring in arrays we find at home, or a picture of some. So far, we have egg boxes, an ice cube tray and a Connect 4 board.
In science, we continued investigating paper waterlilies. We found out what happened if we put them in hot water or cold, soapy water and we used a cardboard waterlily. We all recorded our results in a table- maybe we can tell you what we found out!
We are practising our Country Dancing and can't wait to show you next week - 2pm on Thursday for the Community Tea, 9:10 on Friday for the May King and Queen. The Governors will be serving pastries on Friday morning.
Our Home Learning is to design a programme cover for the Summer Sizzler on June 30th. We could also practice our phonics by playing a game on Phonics Play https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/BuriedTreasure2.html

Beech Class Poets
This week, we carried on our learning about poetry. We read From a Railway Carriage again and talked about why we liked it. Then, it was time to plan and write our own train poems. We used similes, onomatopoeia, alliteration and rhyme. We had to remember when to start a new line too. We enjoyed writing our poems and Mrs McLellan and Mrs Orchard were proud of us.
In Topic, we carried on working in groups to compose our own train music- with a steady beat. Some of us created a rhythm, using words like 'steam train, choo choo' or 'clickety clack' and some of us hummed a melody. We started to think about ways to end our piece of music.
In maths, we have been using arrays to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Then we used the times symbol- 4x5=20 Tom

All Aboard!
In English this week we have been reading poems about trains and responding to them in different ways like clapping the rhythm and thinking of Wow words. Then we thought what we might see on a train ride through Redbourn:

We took this learning forward in music too. We composed our own pieces of music about trains using our bodies and voices. We did this as a whole class then in small groups.
In maths, we have been dividing by sharing numbers into 2 equal groups. We learnt that if you tried to divide an odd number by 2, there would be one left over. William remembered this was called a remainder.
In science we did a fun investigation with a paper waterlily. We predicted what might happen when we put the waterlily into water and then tried it out...

In PSHE we learnt about the different food groups and our home learning us to create a healthy, balanced meal.
The Star Award this week was given to Harry for persevering with his maths and listening to feedback. This meant he could divide by 2, showing his working. Well done, Harry!

Beech Class and the Water Lily Pond
It's been great sharing our Home Learning about our Sporting Hero. There have been so many different choices, and we could all talk about why we like that person.

He painted with oil paints. Benedict
He is more famous than Van Gogh! Mollie
Monet discovered Impressionism. Grace
This means it doesn't look exactly like photos, it's a bit fuzzy. He used quick brush strokes. Ross
We explored collage by finding out what we could do with a piece of tissue paper - twisting, scrunching,layering, tearing and folding. Then we applied our skills to create our own water lily collage inspired by our learning about Monet. Here are some of our collages- we worked really hard and persevered, using different skills. We were all able to talk about what we had enjoyed and done well as well as what we'd improve.

We continued learning netball skills. This week, we thought about shooting and we watched what the England Roses did. We had to stand with our feet shoulder width apart, with our knees a little bent. We learnt how to hold the ball to shoot and made great improvements with our shooting.
We started practising our country dance- Buttered Peas, ready to show you just before half term. Well done to Tom and Poppy who are our May King and Queen.
Our home learning is to play a game with our family- thinking about sharing and taking turns!
This week, the Star Award is for applying learning.. Well done to Benedict, who thought really carefully about his collage skills to make his water lily and pond.

Welcome to Redbourn Primary School
We've had a very exciting first week at Redbourn Primary School. On Tuesday, Years 1 to 6 all went to an assembly together. We met Mrs Hinchliffe and she told us about her pets and answered questions some of us today. Today, we went outside for the opening ceremony, the Town Crier looked amazing in his red coat and we met our MP. A tree was planted and two of the children pulled a big red ribbon. We are very excited to be part of the school.
We started our Topic "All Aboard" with a trip to Buckinghamshire Railway Centre. We had lots of fun.

At the end we went on a miniature train. We saw model and toys. Sophia

When we got back, we used our English skills too write a recount of the trip. We also drew and painted pictures of trains. We used our trip to do our mind map of what we would like to learn. 7
Pips group have been reading instructions this week. Today they followed some instructions to make us all jam sandwiches! Thank you Pips group.
In games, we've been developing our netball skills. We enjoyed watching the England Roses on the whiteboard and it helped us understand how to improve. We worked in threes to practise the different passes and pivoting.
Home Learning is to find or draw a picture of our sporting hero and to write why they are our hero. This is for a display in the hall.
This week's Star Award is for Ross as he was very active throughout our PE lesson and could explain why this was a healthy choice.. Well done, Ross.
Thomas is our Learning Owl this week. He has had such a good attitude to our learning this week and tried really hard. He asked lots of questions for our mind map. Well done, Thomas. You should be very proud. Have a great weekend with Snowy.
It's nearly time for the Fun Run, so on Friday 27th we can come to school in our sporty clothes.

We love you Mrs Byrne!
We've had a really special last week of term, doing lots of lovely things with Mrs Byrne.
Some of us enjoyed coming back into school on Monday to see her. On Tuesday we had lots of fun at our party day. Mr Marvel was REALLY funny and we had yummy cake.
Today, we were able to share all of our hard work over the past few weeks with Mrs Byrne. She was blown away with our beautiful cards and the amazing singing we worked together, as a whole school, to do. The teachers made us laugh a lot when they did their sharing assembly!
Our Home Learning is the FORIS Easter challenge.
Have a brilliant Easter holiday- see you on Tuesday 17th April

Eddie the Penguin Saves the World...
Wow- what a busy week we've had!
It started with our amazing performances of Eddie the Penguin Saves the World... We had so much fun singing, speaking and acting for the school and all of our grown ups. Mrs Turner, Mrs McLellan and Mrs Orchard are so proud of us all too.
I enjoyed saying my lines - Daisy
It was fun when I went on stage to sing the song - William
I enjoyed going on the stage at the end- Charles
We used our English and computing skills together to create non-chronological reports about space. We read non-fiction books to find facts, and wrote them in our own words. Then we used https://creativecommons.org/ to search for and collect pictures to go with our reports. We talked about using the internet safely to collect images. The pictures we find by using this website are ones we are allowed to reuse.
It was hard to collect the right picture with my group. Poppy helped us. We all persevered until we managed to paste it into Word. Grace
We printed the pictures.. Tom
The sun is made out of gas. Arlie
Theo brought in a story called 'Man on the Moon' which we read before we wrote our own space story.
I had an adventure in space. I met an alien and we became friends. Theo
On the way back from space, my spaceship broke down!
In maths, we have been exploring using measures. We used a ruler to measure length. We enjoyed exploring weight using the grams.We discovered how heavy a kilogram is. We also used our reasoning skills to work out how much a container could hold.
Today has been Sports relief. We loved wearing our sports clothes. We had fun dancing with Oak class. The we went outside to skip, play tennis, throw and catch balls and then we went on a run around the outdoors! We hope we've raised lots of money.
This week, we talked about road safety and our Home Learning is to create a poster about it.
Next week is busy.... It's Mrs Byrne's last week.
Monday 3:30-5 we can come back to school with our grown ups to see Mrs Byrne.
On Tuesday, we need to come to school in party clothes :)
This week William got the Star Award for his great thinking about keeping safe near roads. Well done William.
Ben is our Learning Owl this week. He always works hard, he uses 'because' to explain his thinking and he was really enthusiastic in all of our pay rehearsals and performances. Well done, Ben. Have a great weekend with Snowy.

Science Week
This week we took part in a competition for British Science Week. We had lots of card squares that we had to use to make a reptile.We used another piece of card for the legs and tail, then stuck our 3D model onto another piece of card. We had lots of fun, but it really made us use our Learning owl skills of perseverance, trying out different ideas and taking risks.
In science, we have also been finding out about our bodies. We have named and labelled different parts of our body. We also explored our 5 senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste.

I heard birds tweeting quietly - Harry
In maths, we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We looked at patterns on the hundred square to count in tens. We used coins for 2s and 5s and used the Diennes sticks for tens.
In tens, you wouldn't say 6, 7 or 1. You would say 10 or 20. They numbers all end in 0. Mollie
You never say odd numbers in 2s. When you count in 2s from 0, you only say even numbers. Grace
In PSHE we had a look at some boxes, bottles and pictures of medicines and cleaning products. We had a grown up conversation about how we can keep ourselves safe around the medicines. We all knew that we should only have medicines that our grown ups give us and that we shouldn't touch washing tablets and other cleaning things.
Our Star Award this week goes to Theo. He has taken responsibility for singing well, speaking clearly and listening to our instructions during our play rehearsals. he has also tried hard with his work, and talked confidently about keeping safe around medicines. Well done, Theo.
This week's Learning Owl is Mollie. Mollie is a good role model for the rest of the class, she perseveres with her work and always uses Learning through Play time to take her learning forward. Well done, Mollie. Have a great weekend with Snowy...

Money, money, money
This week in maths, we've been learning about money. We have sorted and added coins- we matched coins to pieces of Numicon and found different ways to make an amount. Today we had a go at paying for our snack. Some of us were challenged to find a different way of making an amount.
One of our morning activities was to use coins to make our initial and then find the total.
Ross -My 'R' was 30p.
Theo- Mt 'T' was worth £2.10.
We have been focusing on non-fiction this week in English. We read Animals in Tress and looked at the different features. A glossary is a bit like a dictionary, it helps us understand new words.
We also wrote questions we had about animals.

We are authors
We've had a great first week back after half term. We've enjoyed sharing our Home Learning - it looks like we all had lots of fun in the holiday.
This week, we finished the work we were doing about Katie Morag, by planning and writing our own story about her. We had so much to remember when we were writing - as well as full stops and capital letters, we thought about Wow words (adjectives) and joining words (conjunctions). We also thought carefully about our spelling and handwriting.... We wrote some great stories, with Katie Morag having all sorts of adventures.

Next week is Book Week. Our Home Learning is to do some different reading activities- we could record some of these in our Home Learning Book.
We can bring our favourite book in on Monday, that we will have chance to read throughout the week.
On Friday, we also need to bring in a cushion (if we have one) as we are having a whole school read.
This week, we finished the work we were doing about Katie Morag, by planning and writing our own story about her. We had so much to remember when we were writing - as well as full stops and capital letters, we thought about Wow words (adjectives) and joining words (conjunctions). We also thought carefully about our spelling and handwriting.... We wrote some great stories, with Katie Morag having all sorts of adventures.

In Creative Writing, we used all of our story writing skills again. This time we could write a story about anything we wanted. We all thought this was very exciting and Mrs McLellan is looking forward to reading them all.

This week in maths, we've been using everything we've learnt about adding and taking away to solve problems. We have been learning to do jottings to help us solve the problems- this means drawing marks or small pictures.
In Topic this week, we've been learning about Poland.

We continued our learning about Poland at Woodlands, where we worked together to make bright flowers.

Toe Tapping...
We were really lucky this week because the Game On coaches came to do a volleyball workshop with us. We learnt to do a chest pass, overhead pass and bounce pass. Some of us didn't have the right clothes for outdoor PE, so please check PE bags over half term...
In English, we have carried on our learning using Katie Morag stories. We sequenced the story and wrote about our favourite part. Then, we looked at different pictures from the books and wrote sentences about them.

Number Day
Today is Number Day. We have all come to school wearing a number - some of us have digits, some have a group of objects.
Jessica, Indie and Lucas all have the smallest number - 1
Ross had the biggest number - 301
We have been estimating how many stars are on Mrs McLellan's scarf.
We have been thinking about money and what it is used for. We have been using money to pay for our special snack. Our Home Learning this week is to explore using money - we could play shops, sort coins or trying to add them. We can record our work in our own way.
In Topic, we have been learning about the Isle of Coll. This is a small island in Scotland. We talked about how Coll is similar and different to Redbourn.

Workshadowing
Thank you so much to all of the grown ups who came into Beech Class this week to see how we learn. Mrs McLellan, Mrs Turner and Mrs Orchard would also like to thank you for your wonderful comments.

In our learning this week, we used what we had learnt last week to write poems about all sorts of colours.
In maths, we have been learning about measures. We enjoyed exploring longer, taller or shorter - using rulers and metre sticks. We also talked about how heavy and light things are, and used balance pans to find objects which weighed about the same.
We also had lots of fun exploring how fast toy cars can move. Mrs McLellan asked- Will the blue car always be the fastest. We worked in groups to investigate this and chose our own ways to record using faster/slower than and quickest.
William M says that the blue car was sometimes the quickest but not always.
In science this week, we have been learning about living and non-living things. We also sorted animals and then learnt about their different groupings. We wrote clues to describe animals.
Charles' Clues:
I can jump out and in the water. I am an amphibian. I lay eggs. Can you guess which animal he wrote about?
In dance, we explored moving gracefully, using pointed toes, gentle movements and glides. We worked in pairs to make up sequences of moves.

Our Home Learning this week is to take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch. We should try to look in our gardens or a space near where we live and choose a way to record which birds we see. Our results could also be entered here https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/
On Friday 2nd February it's NSPCC number day/ We can come to school in non-uniform, wearing some kind of number (either a digit or a set of things) We will be doing our learning around the numbers we wear. Please send in a small donation for the NSPCC if you would like to.
Our Star Award this week goes to Ben. He worked really well as part of a group in science and with his partner in dance. Well done, Ben.
This week, Snowy is going home with Harry. Harry has tried hard in his work all week and has taken risks in maths and dance. He also worked well with his partner to make up a dance, which he shared confidently with the rest of the class. Well done, Harry. Have fun with Snowy.

Perfectly Purple
What a fun week we have had. All of our learning has been around purple. We brought in lots of purple things for our purple display.
We started the week by learning how to mix purple.
You need blue and red. If you want you can put white in it to make lighter, or black to make it darker. Ethan
We used our colour mixing to create different pictures using paint. In our morning activity we used different shades of purple to make a fingerprint rainbow.
We used our fingertips and a lolly stick to do the lavender. Evie, Jessica and Ross
We sketched an outline of an iris then used a cotton bud to dab paint around and inside the lines. Sam
This is called pointillism.
We used watercolour pencils to draw a thistle. Harry

Stick Man
This week, we have been doing work about Stick Man. We read the story and acted it out, before trying to write some of it by ourselves. We had to remember capital letters, fingers spaces, does it make sense and full stops. We tried to use some wow words too.
We also drew self portraits.
We look in the mirror and draw our own faces. Tom
It was a bit hard but I kept looking in the mirror. Grace
It really made me think because you have to look in the mirror carefully. Sam
I found it a bit tricky to draw my nose. The first time, I drew it the wrong shape, but I looked in the mirror and improved my drawing. Poppy
Next week we are starting our Colours of the World topic by looking at purple. We can bring things in for a display.

We have had 2 days back at school - we reminded ourselves of the Golden and class rules. We also talked about what makes a good talk partner.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas
What a busy week we've had!
In maths, we have been learning about shapes. We learnt about vertices - this mean a shape with lots of corners. Vertex is one corner. Most shapes have at least one vertex. We were describing 2d and 3d shapes. We enjoyed sharing our home learning about the shapes we found at home.
In creative writing, we had to think of a creature we could build using snow and we wrote an adventure about it.
Daisy wrote about a snow cat. We read her story to the class. It was amazing!
Lucas wrote about a snow horse.
Sophia and Thomas both wrote about a snow dog.
We had a delicious Christmas lunch. It was fun all sitting in the hall together. The teachers served us.
We wore our Christmas hats that we had made in the classroom.
This morning, we really enjoyed sharing our learning with our grown ups. We could talk about the work we have done and our grown ups could see how much progress we've made in Year One!

I feel good about learning because in Reception, my writing was messier and I didn't use finger spaces, but I do now! Mollie

Enjoying Julia Donaldson's Stories
This week in English, we have been reading stories with repeated phrases. We read a lot of stories by Julia Donaldson and talked about how they are similar and different.
Then, we had a go at writing our own versions of Stick Man and The Gruffalo or Smartest Giant.
In maths, we have been doubling numbers.
Doubling means adding the same number twice. Harry
2 plus 2 makes 4. Indie
Double 8 is 16. Beatrice
We also learnt to identify odd and even numbers.
You can't share an odd number between two. Poppy
8 is an even number. Evie
8 is even because 4 is even and 8 is double 4. If you add 2 even numbers, I think the answer will be even. Grace
Grace went on to explore this in Learning through Play. We were really impressed with what she found out.
Our Home Learning this week is to go on a shape hunt.
Don't forget next Friday, 8th December, to come in and look at our books when you drop us off. We might even treat you to some Christmas songs! We will be finished by 9:15. It's also Christmas jumper day.

Starry Night
We have carried on with our learning about stars this week.
We used pastels to add to the pictures we have started. In English, we had a go at writing our own star poems. We did an acrostic poem first.
An acrostic poem is when you write the word down the edge of your page and each line has to start with that letter. Sam
We then wrote some different poems and we were challenged to edit our work.
