We Wish You a Merry Christmas

What a busy week we've had!
In maths, we have been learning about shapes. We learnt about vertices - this mean a shape with lots of corners. Vertex is one corner. Most shapes have at least one vertex. We were describing 2d and 3d shapes. We enjoyed sharing our home learning about the shapes we found at home.

In creative writing, we had to think of a creature we could build using snow and we wrote an adventure about it.
Daisy wrote about a snow cat. We read her story to the class. It was amazing!
Lucas wrote about a snow horse.
Sophia and Thomas both wrote about a snow dog.

We had a delicious Christmas lunch. It was fun all sitting in the hall together. The teachers served us.
We wore our Christmas hats that we had made in the classroom.

This morning, we really enjoyed sharing our learning with our grown ups. We could talk about the work we have done and our grown ups could see how much progress we've made in Year One!
I try hard with my work. Tom
I feel good about learning because in Reception, my writing was messier and I didn't use finger spaces, but I do now! Mollie
I am really focused. Jessica
I have been taking my learning forward and I am confident with my learning. Connie

Our home learning doesn't need to be back until January - we need to record some of the things we do over the holidays.

Monday is our party day- we need to wear school uniform all day.
Don't forget school finishes at 1:30pm on Tuesday.

Our  Learning Owl this week is going to Grace. She has worked really hard all of this term, she takes risks with her learning and uses Learning through Play to take her learning forward. She is also a good buddy to other people in the class. Well done, Grace. Have a great weekend with Snowy.

This is our last blog before Christmas. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Enjoying Julia Donaldson's Stories

This week in English, we have been reading stories with repeated phrases. We read a lot of stories by Julia Donaldson and talked about how they are similar and different.
Then, we had a go at writing our own versions of Stick Man and The Gruffalo or Smartest Giant.

In maths, we have been doubling numbers.
Doubling means adding the same number twice. Harry
2 plus 2 makes 4. Indie
Double 8 is 16. Beatrice

We also learnt to identify odd and even numbers.
You can't share an odd number between two. Poppy
8 is an even number. Evie
8 is even because 4 is even and 8 is double 4. If you add 2 even numbers, I think the answer will be even. Grace
Grace went on to explore this in Learning through Play. We were really impressed with what she found out.

Our Home Learning this week is to go on a shape hunt.

Don't forget next Friday, 8th December, to come in and look at our books when you drop us off. We might even treat you to some Christmas songs! We will be finished by 9:15. It's also Christmas jumper day.

The Star Award this week is going to Ethan, for being so polite. Well done, Ethan!

Sam is our Learning Owl this week. He always tries his best and takes risks with his learning. He has also been a good buddy- helping others with their learning in maths and computing. Well done, Sam. Have a great weekend with Snowy.

Starry Night

We have carried on with our learning about stars this week.
We used pastels to add to the pictures we have started. In English, we had a go at writing our own star poems. We did an acrostic poem first.
An acrostic poem is when you write the word down the edge of your page and each line has to start with that letter. Sam
We then wrote some different poems and we were challenged to edit our work.
You can change and add things. Thomas
To make it even better. Ben

In creative writing, we used all of our learning over the past 2 weeks to write another poem or a story about stars. We all worked really hard and used ideas from what we have read. Daisy's story was amazing - you will be able to read it on the website next week!

In maths, we have been working out how many tens and ones are in a number.  We made numbers to 20- on the tens frames and then found one more or fewer. We talked about what we could see.
"1 less than 17 is 16. 1 more than 17 is 18"

We've had great fun decorating the Christmas tree today. From Monday, we can start bringing in Christmas cards to put in the postbox. They need to have the class written on the envelope please.

On Tuesday, we are going to Woodlands... We need our wellie boots and an all in one (if you have one. We have plenty in school, so don't worry if you don't) A hat, scarf and gloves would also be good!

This week's Star Award went to someone who is an amazing friend. Poppy is so kind and caring, she helps her friends to sort things out too. Well done, Poppy.

Lyla is our Learning Owl this week. She is very resilient - she keeps on going, even when it's tricky. She listens well and works independently when she is asked to. Well done, Lyla. Have a great weekend with Snowy.

Walking to School and May Dancing

We've really enjoyed walking to school this week. We went past the finish line on our chart because so many of us walked. It was good fu...
